Hi, it's been awhile. A lot has changed since we last spoke. I finished my second to last semester of school, I quit YouTube (I'll make a separate post about that), I got a dog!
I pla to write out a whole life update at one point just word vomiting everything that's happened. But that's not what today is about. Today we're talking about the craft.
If you don't know, if this is your first post and you know nothing about me, I'm a practicing witch. It will be half decade on june 20th that I've been doing this. I have three deties Hermes, Aphrodite, and Apollo. But I feel like people don't really understand what that means. So let me help you out.
When I tell people I'm a witch they often have a very negative connotation. They immediately think black magic (which is actually a phrase rooted in racism. I'll link some stuff below about it). They think demons and evil and hexing and ungodliness. Which couldn't be farther from the truth.
Now let me make this very clear. Every witch is different. We have different beliefs, different practices, different gods (some have no gods), and just different life styles. I think that's one of the most beautiful things about the craft is it's customizable. For example, I'm writter and have been since the 4th grade. So, I work with Apollo and do a lot of manifestation and spells through things like poetry and journal exercises.
Point is, I can not speak for every witch. However I think I can say. There is absolutely nothing evil about witchcraft. It is healing and poetic and beautiful. So let's get into what witchcraft means to me!
There are five pillars to my witchcraft.
1. Deity work
2. Writting
3. Inner child healing
4. Research
5. Crafting
First, deity work!
I won't get to into this because deity work is a very complex thing that deserves a whole separate post. Adding to the Complexityi havr a unique realtonship with each of my gods. I will However tell you some things that are bit universal.
1. Prayer/just hanging out with my gods
2. Tarot
3. Journaling on lessons I receive for them
4. Doing little stuff for them (wearing there colors, listening to music they like, eating a scarred food of there's)
5. Assigning stuff I own to them (for example detie stuff animal's)
Second, writting. As I mentioned before writting is a big part of my craft. I do it everyday all them time constantly. I journal, I write poetry and letters, I have original characters I constantly write wips for, and I'm working on multiple book series.
My next poetry collection is all about my spiritually and what it's like to be a witch. Writing is my favorite form of self expression and I plan to do it forever.
Next, inner child work. There's a lot about inner child work I could write about. Again this type of magic is different for everyone. The main ways i like to work with my younger self is consuming media I loved as a kid, decorating my room, dressing up, eating my favorite childhood food, and hanging out with people from my childhood.
As someone who had a very rough upbringing it's extremely healing to just let myself enjoy the things I did as a kid. I also love working on my inner child while hanging out with my deties because it feels like someone protecting me.
A huge part of witchcraft that is often not talk about is, research. One of my biggest pet peeves is people who choose to speak when they know nothing. That's why it's so important to me as a witch to research.
There are two types of research I do. One, classic witchy research. What a certain tarot card means, the properties of crystals, and ancient myths. And then the next part is more activism-focused.
A huge part of witchcraft is social and political issues. As a witch you should look after your community. Even though we are all different we are also all allies. I only started recently doing research on this but I have started a Google doc titled "info dumping" with links to articles and books to read.
Again, I just started, so it's small, but I'm doing my best to read a little every day. I know it can be hard to get into these topics, and not everyone has the time to read 500-page books and essays. That's why I recommend starting small. With things like articles, poetry, or simply following and listening to minority voices.
Lastly, crafting. I don't know if realized this but half of the word witch craft is craft. It's artistic and scrappy. Spells are a form of craft especially spell jars and offerings. There's also more traditional crafts like making cards or vision boarding.
So, no witchcraft is evil or satanic. A lot of it is just making your everyday life more magical! If you have any questions, please let me know. And I wish all my witches a magical journey.
